Easy Mojito Recipes

Simple and Refreshing Classic Cuban Mojitos and Fresh Fruit Mojitos

Feb 8, 2009 Melissa Parks

The simplicity of this drink is its most charming aspect. Rum, lime, mint, sugar, and sparkling water are combined to create a unique and timeless taste.

The essential element in this refreshing Cuban beverage is fresh ingredients. Do not use a mix to prepare a mojito—you will be cheating yourself out of the authenticity and appeal of the cocktail! It is also important that these drinks are made one by one. The muddling process is not nearly as successful when attempting to make a pitcher of mojitos.

Classic Mojito Recipe

Ingredients:

  • One small handful fresh mint (or 6-7 large leaves) from your herb garden or local produce section
  • Four slices of fresh lime
  • One shot (1.5 oz) rum (Mount Gay Rum or Bacardi Limon are two favorites)
  • Two tablespoons sugar (powdered sugar or simple syrup may be used for thorough dissolving, or brown or raw sugar may provide a more authentic taste)
  • Ice cubes and club soda to fill glass

Directions for Preparation:

  1. Place mint and lime slices in tall glass. Muddle gently with muddler or wooden spoon. Though muddling is necessary to release the essential oils of the fruit, it is not necessary to tear the mint leaves.
  2. Add sugar, ice, rum, and enough soda water to nearly fill the glass.
  3. Shake to mix and serve in a cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with an extra lime slice and sprig of mint. Find a sunny lounge chair and enjoy!

Making Fresh Fruit Mojitos: A New Twist on the Classic Recipe

The best of the garden (or the grocer) can be utilized in these ideas for fresh fruit mojitos. When making a classic mojito, a fair amount of sugar is necessary to balance the taste of rum. With the addition of natural sugars from fruit and berries, less refined sugar is needed. Use the classic mojito recipe and adjust the sugar by taste. 1-1 ½ tablespoons is usually more than enough depending on the sweetness of the fruit. Choose one or a combination of the fruit ingredients below and muddle with mint and lime.

  • 1 small handful of pomegranate seeds

Directions for Preparation:

  1. Muddle mint, lime, fruit, and sugar together gently.
  2. Add ice, rum, and club soda.
  3. Shake to mix and serve in a tall glass with a mint and lime garnish.

It is important to remember that the magnificence of mojitos comes from the simplicity of the cocktail, so it’s better not to go overboard. However, experimenting with different combinations of ingredients is a fun and creative way to discover new cocktail recipes!
