Fireworks Themed Cocktail Recipes

Editor's Choice Roman Candle,Sparkler, and Firecracker Shots and Cocktails

Jun 29, 2009 Angie Rayfield

Ever since the Chinese invented gunpowder, people have found reasons to blow things up during celebrations. Fireworks themed cocktails may be a little calmer.

It's a bit of a puzzle. Who thought of shooting things into the air and watching them explode as a way to celebrate?

According to Fireworks Magazine (yes, there really is such a thing), evil spirits were thought to be afraid of loud noises, and so noise was made at festivals and religious ceremonies to keep the spirits away. Originally, sticks of bamboo were thrown into fires to explode from the heat. The racket caused by gunpowder surely should work even better! The well-known red color of firecrackers is also part of the magic to ward off evil spirits. Traditional holds that the spirits don't like red, and so the scraps of red paper littering the area would continue to hold the spirits at bay even after the ruckus has subsided.

Luckily, there's no need to actually blow things up to have an explosively good holiday. Whether it's Fourth of July or New Year's Eve, or somewhere in between, simply serve one of the firecracker-themed cocktails to keep everyone on their toes.

Roman Candle

  • 4 oz. Korbel Brut champagne
  • 1 oz. Tuaca Italian Liqueur
  • Dried cranberries

Add the Korbel and the Tuaca to a tall fluted glass. Garnish with the dried cranberries. The bubbling champagne will cause the cranberries to constantly rise and fall in the glass.

Sparkler

  • 1 oz. pomegranate vodka
  • 2 oz. sparkling wine or champagne
  • Splash of pomegranate juice

Combine the vodka and pomegranate juice in the bottom of a tall fluted glass. Top off with sparkling wine or champagne.

Tequila Firecracker Shot

  • 1/2 oz. tequila
  • 1/2 oz. Rumple Mintze
  • 1/2 oz. Goldschlager

Mix all three ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice to chill. Strain into a shotglass and serve.

Firecracker Cocktail

  • 1 oz. vodka
  • 2 oz. dark rum
  • 1/2 oz. sloe gin
  • Orange juice

Build in a rocks glass over ice. Add the spirits, then top off with orange juice.

Midori Firecracker Cocktail

  • 1 oz. Midori melon liqueur
  • 1 oz. apple schnapps
  • 2 oz. cranberry juice

Fill a rocks glass with cracked ice. Add the ingredients in the order given, pouring slowly to create a layered effect.

Fizzing Firecracker Shot

This shot is a lot of fun, but also quite messy. Not recommended for consumption in rooms with white carpet.

  • 1 oz. cinnamon schnapps
  • 2-3 dashes tabasco
  • 1 dash grenadine
  • Splash of club soda

Build in the order given in a shot glass. Place the palm of the hand over the top of the shot to cover, then slam it down on the table. Drink while it's still foaming.

A Pistol and a Firecracker

Warning - this cocktail packs a big wallop. Putting together a pistol and a firecracker is a dangerous combination, and so is the cocktail.

  • 2 oz. amaretto
  • 1 oz. bourbon
  • 1 oz. cola

Shake the bourbon and amaretto in a cocktail shaker with ice to chill. Strain over fresh ice in a highball glass, and top off with cola.
