For a refreshing tangy flavor, cocktails made with gin are perfect cooling off drinks. Combine gin with juices such as grapefruit and pineapple to add bite to cocktails.

Gin is one of the world’s most popular drinks, with a very distinctive taste. Combined with other alcohols and juices, gin is an ideal drink with which to make cocktails. Drinks such as Captain’s Table, Gin Daisy, Flying Dutchman, Grass Skirt and Pink Pussycat are easy to make and very refreshing to taste.

Captain’s Table

This cocktail combines the tangy tastes of both gin and Campari.

  • 2 measures of gin
  • Half measure of Campari
  • 1 teaspoon grenadine
  • 1 measure orange juice (freshly squeezed if possible)
  • 4 measures of ginger ale
  • 1 maraschino cherry

Half fill the shaker with ice cubes. Add the gin, Campari, grenadine and orange juice. Shake well and strain into a tall glass with ice cubes. Top up with the ginger ale and garnish with the cherry.

Gin Daisy

These daisy cocktails were invented in America in the 1850s and need not be confined to just gin.

  • 2 measures of gin
  • 1 measure of lemon juice
  • Half a teaspoon of castor sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of grenadine
  • 1 measure soda water
  • 1 maraschino cherry
  • 1 orange slice
  • 1 sprig of mint

Half fill the shaker with ice cubes and add the gin, lemon juice sugar and grenadine. Shake well and strain into an old fashioned glass filled with broken ice. Top up with the soda. Decorate with the cherry, orange slice and mint.

Flying Dutchman

A simple cocktail to make, originally made with Dutch gin and Curacao from the former Dutch East Indies, hence the name.

  • 2 measures of gin
  • Half measure of triple sec or Cointreau

Fill an old fashioned glass with ice cubes, add the gin and the Cointreau and stir well.

Grass Skirt

This cocktail evokes the tastes of Hawaii with its mixture of pineapple and gin.

  • 1 and a half measures of gin
  • 1 measure of triple sec or Cointreau
  • 1 measure of pineapple juice
  • Half a teaspoon of grenadine
  • 1 pineapple slice

Half fill the shaker with ice cubes. Add the gin, triple sec or Cointreau, grenadine and pineapple juice. Shake well and pour un-strained into an old fashioned glass. Garnish with the slice of pineapple.

Pink Pussycat

There are many pink cocktails, but grapefruit juice mixed with gin really gives this cocktail a bite.

  • 2 measures of gin
  • 2 measures of pineapple juice
  • 2 measures of grapefruit juice
  • Half measure of grenadine
  • Slice of grapefruit
  • 1 maraschino cherry

Half fill the shaker with ice cubes, add the gin, pineapple, grapefruit and grenadine. Shake well and strain into a tall glass. Decorate with the grapefruit and cherry.

There are many more gin based cocktails but because of its distinctive taste not everyone is enamored of its juniper flavor. Fortunately cocktails can be made using a variety of alcohols, such as vodka based cocktails and tequila based cocktails. For those that do not drink alcohol or for children, “Mocktails”, cocktails without alcohol are every bit as refreshing.
