One of the original cocktails, the martini has been around for quite sometime. Some believe it dates as far back as the sixteenth century. It was originally made with gin, but now it is almost always served with vodka. The Vodka Martini, with its signature glass, is a symbol of sophistication and style. It represents power and a socialite status. Of course, anyone can drink a Vodka Martini, but not everyone can make it.

There is an art to making specialty drinks, but with enough practice, it becomes second nature. This recipe and technique for a Vodka Martini is fun and will be enjoyed by all who experience it. Do a couple of practice runs to get the essence of the process, but remember that special touches are appreciated with everything homemade. Incorporate a special garnish or decoration to make the creation original.

The Technique to Making a Vodka Martini

In order to make a successful Vodka Martini, one must have the necessary equiptment and ingredients. Once these items have been gathered, the process of actually making the martini can begin.

Ingredients and Equipment

  • Ice
  • Vodka
  • Vermouth
  • Lemon twist
  • Green olives
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Martini glasses
  • Martini picks

Technique

  1. Have the vodka chilling in the freezer beforehand. By keeping the vodka cold, it will prevent it from melting the ice that it comes in contact with and as a result prevent unnecessary alcohol dilution.
  2. Before you start the actual martini making process, fill a martini glass with ice and set it aside on the bar counter. This is to chill the glass before pouring the Vodka Martini.
  3. Fill a cocktail shaker full of ice. Take a bottle of vermouth and pour ½ ounce into the cocktail shaker. The purpose of this is to line the ice cubes.
  4. Strain the vermouth taking care not to shake the ice. Once the excess vermouth has been removed, pour 2 ounces of chilled vodka over the ice in the shaker.
  5. Stir the vodka and ice gently. Do not shake. The purpose of the ice is to chill the vodka further, not weaken the drink with needless water.
  6. Go back to the ice filled martini glass and empty it. Decorate the glass with a lemon twist or a martini sword with a couple of green olives. Now pour the Vodka Martini into the glass and enjoy.

In addition, have fun with the martini glasses. There are so many styles available, and the choice should be as unique as the bartender. Specialty martini glasses are found in stores or online. Also, if a bar is not part of the current floor plan, consider a swing bar. These fold inward fro easy storage and are perfect for apartments or for the occasional entertainer that doesn’t need a fully equip bar area.
