Pumpkin may be ignored much of the year, but when fall comes and the weather grows cold, it becomes a favorite, even in cocktails.

There are a number of ways to enjoy pumpkin flavor in a cocktail. Some recipes call for using canned pumpkin or pumpkin puree. Bols Pumpkin Smash and Hiram Walker's Pumpkin Spice Liqueur are now available as seasonal offerings, and Monin offers a non-alcoholic Pumpkin Spice syrup.

Pumpkin Martini

  • 1/2 oz. Sylk Cream Liqueur
  • 2 oz. vanilla vodka
  • 1/2 oz. pumpkin liqueur or pumpkin spice syrup
  • 1 tsp. whipped cream

Combine the Sylk Cream Liqueur and vanilla vodka in an ice-filled shaker and shake well. Add the pump liqueur and shake again. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Serve garnished with a cinnamon stick, and topped with a dollop of whipped cream.

Pumpkin Vanilla Martini

  • 2 parts vanilla vodka
  • 1 part pumpkin liqueur
  • splash of cream

Mix all ingredients in a shaker with ice, and shake to combine. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and a shake or two of nutmeg. As an alternative, rim the cocktail glass with the nutmeg.

Pumpkin Pie Cocktail

  • 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
  • 1/2 c. crushed ice
  • 1 tbs. canned pumpkin
  • 1 oz. half-and-half
  • 1 oz. spiced rum
  • 1/4 tsp. pumpkin pie spice

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Serve topped with whipped cream.

The Calabaza-tini

Calabaza is the Spanish word for pumpkin. A purist may insist that a tequila-based drinked cannot rightfully be termed a martini, but technicalities aside, it's still a good cocktail.

  • 1 1/2 oz. tequila (a reposada tequila is the best choice)
  • 1/2 oz. pumpkin spice syrup
  • 3 oz. half-and-half

Add all ingredients to an ice-filled shakers, and shake briskly to combine. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Served garnished with a dash or two of ground cinnamon.

Hot Pumpkin

  • 1 oz. pumpkin spice liqueur
  • 1/2 oz. coffee liqueuer
  • hot coffee

Pour the ingredients into a pre-heated mug in the order listed. Serve garnished with a dollop of whipped cream.

Pumpkin French 75

  • 1 oz. Plymouth Gin
  • 1 oz. pumpkin puree
  • 1 1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 oz. simple syrup
  • champagne

Combine the first four ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake to combine, and strain into a champagne flute. Top off with champagne.

Nutty Pumpkin Martini

  • 1/2 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz. pumpkin spice liqueur
  • 1/2 oz. Frangelico
  • 1 oz. half & half

Combine all ingredients in an ice-filled shaker, and shake to combine. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

  • 1 oz. Frangelico
  • 1 oz. pumpkin spice syrup
  • 1 shot espresso
  • 4 oz. steamed half-and-half

Combine all ingredients in a pre-heated coffee mug. Garnish with whipped cream, and dust with pumpkin pie spice.

Rum Pumpkin Pie

  • 1 oz. rum
  • 3/4 oz. pumpkin pie filling
  • 1/2 oz. coffee liqueur
  • 2 oz. cold milk
  • ice

Thoroughly mix all ingredients in a blender. Rim a highball glass with crushed graham cracker crumbs. Pour the cocktail into the rimmed glass, and dust with ground cinnamon for garnish.
